Every once in a while, a class demo turns out amazing. Such is the case with “Pi-rat.” We were studying anthropomorphism, a term which means forcing a connection between a human and an animal, often in a visual manner. I was able to photograph some good reference for pirate and background. As I was piecing everything together, I made it a rat, showing one technique for anthropomorphism, and that is simply swapping out human heads with animal heads.
I didn’t realize, until later the visual pun I had just created. I guess I can’t help myself, even in my subconscious, I’m creating silly dad jokes.
The technique is pen and ink on Canson Multi-Media paper, overlaid with pencil for the softer mid-tone value areas. Being that this is new art, of course, prints are immediately available. If you like this blog and wish to continue to support what I do, consider purchasing one.
