What comes to mind when you think of the perfect getaway? How would you describe it?
For me, I love the ocean. Being from landlocked Colorado, it is difficult to get to those far away shores, and so I appreciate it the few chances I can.
That brings me to this weeks new art!
New art: Hawaiian landscape. Like most of my good art recently, this one began as a class demo. It was painted from an old photo we took on a trip to Hawaii, around 2006. I scumbled an underpainting before I applied the thicker layers on top. I love the negative space striping you get with palm branches, and so I tried to recreate that.
At one point, however, there was just so much vegetation tangled all together, especially in the shadow area, that I decided to eventually leave a lot of the painting unfinished, allowing my thin underpainting brush strokes complete the picture. Sometimes a mix between the finished and unfinished is a perfect harmony for an effective painting.
